The 1980s to Present
In 1986, we formulated plans for an expansive Renewal and Restoration of the Morristown Jewish Center. Our building now features a beautifully decorated social hall and a grand ballroom, a nursery school wing and many other improvements. The ambiance of the Willner Chapel has been enhanced by the installation of magnificent stained-glass windows dedicated by individual families. During this time, MJCBY established a nursery school, Shalom Yeladim, now know as Shalom Yeladim-The Judie Gerstein Early Learning Center, which serves children from birth to Pre-K.
Our 100th Anniversary was marked several years ago with a grand reception attended by many dignitaries. As part of our celebration we decided to use the Hebrew translation of House of Israel, Beit Yisrael, as part of our name. During the reception, the Mayor of Morristown, John DeLaney, announced that the driveway from Speedwell Avenue to the rear parking lot would be named Beit Yisrael Way.
The arms of our synagogue also have a long legacy of involvement in our community. Among the most devoted of workers have been the women of Sisterhood, or the Ladies’ Auxiliary as they were called when first organized in 1916. Through their efforts, the beautiful ark that graces our BIMAH was purchased and donated to the Synagogue. The first goal of the Sisterhood women was to create a Hebrew School, and when that became a reality, they took on other projects.
Sisterhood continues to support the Center with unique programs and raises funds to serve our members and the community at large. A Men’s Club, begun in 1947, continues till the present, providing a great deal of assistance with social, religious and educational programs, as well as a feeling of fellowship.
The force behind our physical and spiritual growth has been, and always will be, our membership – the people who wish to affiliate, participate and work together for the improvement of the Morristown Jewish Center Beit Yisrael. Our Synagogue continues to thrive because of the dedication of superb clergy and lay leadership, and an outstanding core of men, women and children whose commitment to the Jewish Center and the Jewish community in Morris County is without parallel.
As our elders built the foundation of a quality Jewish life for us, we in turn extend ourselves so that our children and our grandchildren will continue to enjoy the fruits of our combined efforts.
